When I went through my eating disorder recovery process, I realised the bulimia was the way I had learnt to soothe my underlying anxiety.
After bingeing and purging I felt instant relief, relaxed, my racing mind calmed and my body no longer on edge… it was a genius way my body had found to help me feel better in the short term… of course, in the long term (as with all addiction) it was damaging my body. So, in order to heal, I needed to re-learn healthier ways to help regulate my nervous system. I tried journaling, counselling, positive thinking, affrmations - nothing quite got to the root, and that is because anxiety lives in the body.
Anxiety is symptom of a body in survival mode, so it needs a body-based approach to be able to heal. This is where somatic practices have saved me. Bulimia is no longer necessary as I have new practical, body based tools to self-soothe and regulate, and these are also what I teach to my clients.
There’s nothing mysterious about somatics - it’s a science of feeling safe - and I want to live in a world where everyone knows how to regulate their nervous system.
